Numurkah is perfectly placed in the heart of Moira Shire. Surrounded by rich rural land, the township is only 20 minutes from Shepparton along the Goulburn Valley Highway and just 2 hours by road from Melbourne. There is a thriving community and central business district.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1830's, with land used mainly for farming. Growth in the region was minimal until the 1880s, when the construction of the railway occured.

Significant development occured during the post-war years, with rapid growth between the 1940s and the 1960s. Expansion was spurred by the establishment of a soldier settlement scheme.

In recent times, population growth has occured as a restul of new residential dwellings. Today, the rural land is used mainly for dairy farming, grazing and orchards.
